Does your website comply with the new law on cookies?

26-05-2011

New laws governing the use of cookies came into force today implementing changes made in 2009 to the European Union's ePrivacy Directive.

The new law requires website operators to ensure they have "informed consent" for the use of cookies.

A cookie is a common method used by web developers to temporarily save information from a website which can be used to track user activities. For more information on cookies see this website.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) have a PDF document available to inform you how to comply with the new cookie laws which you can download from here (126KB)

This document advises you to take the following steps now:

  1. Check what type of cookies and similar technologies you use and how you use them.
  2. Assess how intrusive your use of cookies is.
  3. Decide what solution to obtain consent will be best in your circumstances.

We can help by investigating the above advisories for you, contact us on the usual methods.
